Ayurveda is a form of alternative medicine in use now worldwide. The word "Ayurveda" is a compound of āyus meaning "life" and veda meaning "knowledge", and would roughly translate as the "Science of Life". Ayurveda is a science in the sense that it is a complete system. It is a qualitative, holistic science of health and longevity, a philosophy and system of healing the whole person, body and mind. Ayurveda is also one among the few traditional systems of medicine involving surgery.
Ayurveda was first described by Agnivesha, in his book Agnivesh Tantra. The book was later revised by Charaka, and renamed to Charaka Samhita. Another early text of Ayurveda is the Sushruta Samhita, which in addition to the Charaka Samhita, served as the textual material in the ancient Universities of Takshashila and Nalanda.Ayurvedic manuals were written by Charaka, Sushruta, and Vagbhata that give detailed descriptions of the various practices. Charaka listed 500 hundred remedies and Sushruta over 700 vegetable medicines.
Ayurveda is India’s traditional, natural system of medicine that has been practiced for more than 5,000 years. Ayurveda was the system of health care conceived and developed by the seers (rishis) and natural scientists through centuries of observations, experiments, discussions, and meditations.
The aim of Ayurgoa is to give guidelines for maintenance and promotion of health as well as prevention and treatment of diseases. The aim of every human being is to attain a state of happiness with fulfillment of all desires acquiring health and live a religious life and thats the goal of ayurgoa. |
